Caught in the maelstrom of history, she goes on to fight for the Red cause in Siberia and at the end of the civil war dreams of participating in building the new society promised — 36 — INTRODUCTION  in the near future. But the violence she witnessed and participated in during the years of the revolution and civil war have left their mark on her personality and behavior. Communicative violence assaults her from different directions: the women who share her communal apartment criticize her behind her back; the secretaries that work in her office building ridicule her; and most important, the man she decides is the one for her rudely rejects her overtures.

It would be a great simplification, however, to attribute the violence reflected in 20th century Russian short stories only to the impact of totalitarian regimes. One has only to read, for example, “Never” (2000), a story by Petrushevskaya, one of the leading representatives of women’s prose in the 1980s and 1990s. The heroine comes face-to-face with the irrepressible and irrational nature of violence in the “common people,” the narod. Some village young people threaten a city woman with physical violence simply because of vague rumors and outrageous suppositions started by the adults.
