It uses rapid-fire recall of math facts, develops quick thinking of basic operations of the number system, and promotes studying of concepts in preparation for a high-stress activity that is competitive. The toss allows the teacher to give direct questions to an engaged group. Students feel smart because they can achieve a correct response quickly.
