Others wrote literature that celebrated American democracy. Allen Ginsberg was only seventeen in 1943, but he cast himself as the voice of his generation, and in high school wrote poetry that looked forward to the defeat of the Axis powers and the birth of a better world. When the war ended in 1945, there was a sense of euphoria and liberation among writers and intellectuals as well as in the population as a whole. The troops came home. Families were reunited. S. government censorship ended. The promise of peace and prosperity at home instilled an infectious sense that a new day was dawning.

It was a lesson that Allen learned early in life: turn pain into poetry, or simply turn to poetry. Louis introduced him to verse and taught him how to read a poem. The point was to read between the lines, Louis explained. The world of poetry was infinite and it existed everywhere. You could lose yourself in a single poem — discover its meter, rhyme, metaphors, and similes. Louis showed Allen how to perform poetry. Pacing back and forth in the living room in Paterson, and breathing deeply, he read aloud from the works of Milton, Wordsworth, Dickinson, and so many others.

Edith Ginsberg, Louis’s second wife, was nurturing, loving, and emotionally stable, but she rarely inspired poetry. Crazy women inspired Allen: his mother, Naomi; his surrogate mother, Joan Burroughs, who lived on the edge until her accidental death at the hands of her husband, William; and Natalie Jackson, who was lover to both Allen and Neal Cassady, and who committed suicide in late 1955, when Allen was in the midst of writing Howl. His muse—whether male or female—tended to be mad. ” In fact, Louis’s work was often musty, sentimental, and sweet, the rhymes predictable, the lines on the page neat and tidy.
