Dividing 12 volts by 12 ohms will equal 1 amp flowing (Figure 3-10). Most of the actual examples on the modem vehicle are with approximately 12 volts applied because most components are powered by the vehicle’s 12-volt battery, but circuits with more or less voltage can just as easily be figured using Ohm’s Law. We use Ohm’s Law again when we discuss types of circuits toward the end of this chapter. 12 Ohms of resistance YOU SHOULD KNOW Ohm’s Law is the relationship between voltage, current, a n d resistance.

Look at Figure 3-3. In the top example, water flows because there is a pressure of 12 pounds per square inch from the left. But notice in the bottom example that water will also flow where a pressure of 12 pounds per square inch is pushing against 4 pounds per square inch and still pushes or moves the water to the right. The pressure difference will move the water from a higher to a lower pressure. Electricity is much the same. If a pressure of 12 volts is applied against a pressure of 4 volts, the electrons will move fiom the higher 12 volts toward the lower 4 volts because of the 8-volt difference.
