This direction of UNCTAD’s work was actively exploited (although without meaningful success) by the former socialist countries of Eastern Europe to fight against their discriminatory treatment in East-West trade. Also, for more than two decades (from the mid1960s to the end of the 1980s), UNCTAD was a pioneer in exploring and designing new forms of trade and economic cooperation between developing countries and the socialist countries of Eastern Europe based on the realities of a centrally-planned system in the latter.
As a matter of fact, there was a rising cycle of intellectual contributions that has focused on research and analysis, particularly on critically assessing the new conventional wisdom and seeking to reconstruct an alternative approach to development.
